Subject: Getting an out of state duplicate title

Devils Lake, ND
I bought a pickup in MN last winter. Found it on Craigslist and paid cash. Seller signed the title over to me. I guess it doesn't matter now, but either I or the NDDOT lost the original title in the process of applying for ND plates. Now I have a pickup with MN plates and no proof I own it.

ND says I need to find the original owner and have him file for a duplicate title. Having paid cash, I'm not sure I can find his name to find his phone number to find him. That's assuming he has a home phone and not just a cel. For that matter, say I call the guy and ask him to do this. He realizes I have no title and no cancelled check and reports the pickup stolen. Do I want to risk it?

I'm told I need to get a ND court order for this and I have a call into those people. Am I barking up the right tree?
