We have used the Topcon with thier X20 computer. I know this is not the same but would suggest changing the baud rate to possibly 9600 and use a GGA record. I am not sure if the Hyperlite will go to 4800.
In the past we quite often saw what you describe. If you have already tried these settings, possibly we could help with some more info.
