Subject: RE: corn polinating

Hazelton, Kansas
Brassring,

Even for the relatively short season, drought tolerant corns we plant here (SC Kansas), there are limits. We exceeded those limits last year, by a wide margin. My corn had good ear size (approx. 18 x 44 or so), but only about 3 to 6 kernels per ear got pollinated.

The plants never got over about 4 feet tall. This is notill, skip row corn (plant two, skip one) with good residue cover. It lasted about a week longer than the neighbor's every row corn, but ALL corn yields were zero in this area last year.

But then, we were in the darkest red on the drought monitor map for a long time. Many, many highs were over 100, and we had lots of wind.

The short answer is, if you are very dry, just starting to tassel, and get 100+ temps with wind and no rain for the next week...well...it's a damn shame.

Hope I'm wrong.

MDS
