Hi Eugene,

we did lots of stand counts in our corn plots last week.

most of our corn is looking really good averaging around 30k but one field is sporadic just like you described.

the sporadic field had a strong stand of red clover that we terminated with a rotavator about 3 weeks before planting.

the clover residue did not digest much without any rain... leading to this field having significantly more residue at the time of planting than all of the other fields (http://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/get-attachment.asp?action=view&attachmentid=144278)

we did a bunch of digging yesterday afternoon and found wire worms in some of the kernels that did not grow... many other dead kernels had evidence of feeding by wireworms (or possibly some other pest).

One interesting twist is that we planted a hybrid comparison in this field... and one hybrid was much more compromised than the other with an average population of ~ 14k (average of > twenty 1/1000th acre counts) as compared to ~ 9k higher for the other hybrid. We strongly considered tilling up the field and replanting but the seed companies recommended that we keep the plots.
