It all depends on soil type... some soil will only release water so fast. Actually quite a few guys around here are using a lot of 3" tile for those runs, but those are spots with a lot of grade... like 5% type of fall.

Unless the run is very long... I wouldnt put anything larger then 4" in for laterals in my soil types.

But around here a 1% grade is considered flat and we rarely have to go more then a mile to find a creek.
