Actually, the MT cooler is probably more efficient than the others.

It doesn't make sense that it is stable in manual and unstable in auto. The only thing the manual position does is take the servo valve out of the equation. Putting it in manual is a great troubleshooting method. Two things can make the numbers jump. One is as joeatdawn said; vapor running through the flowmeter. This can be determined easily if there is frost building up between the cooler and the servo valve. If the flowmeter has frost building on it, it's a sure bet that there is vapor running through it. This sometimes can be caused by a dirty strainer, or over-running the system capabilities.

The other thing is that you mentioned you have the Trak-Star. Those are notorious for failing, and there's not that many of them still operating. We used to try to clean them by spraying brake cleaner fluid on the membrane. This would do one of two things. Either clean it up so it would work for a while more, or more often, find a hole or crack in the membrane and make a sale for a GPS speed puck.... If the speed is jumping, so will the rate/acre.
