E.Central MN | Plenty of people are involved in accidents that haven't been drinking. There was an accident a few years ago where an emergency vehicle/trooper was stopped along the side of a freeway and someone was distracted(gawking) by the flashing lights and ran into the patrol car. The point that needs to be learned from these accidents is not to grow up in fear of drunks, but really to start learning that its not very smart to put yourself in harms way. Stopping a car near moving traffic for no better reason than to switch drivers shows very poor judgement. Sometimes you don't have any choice, for example if your car quits while sitting in stopped traffic, the traffic clears and you're sitting there looking like a bulls-eye in a shooting gallery. But other times the driver has options to get as far from the moving traffic lane as necessary. Drivers, especially young drivers, need to be taught that they have a responsibility for their own safety on the highways. And that will continue to be the case as long as humans are driving the vehicles. | |
