Sprint is not "abandoning Nextel". They are shuttering it, for a few reasons, the main one being that they are going to use the Nextel frequencies for their 4G LTE network.
I had to switch from Nextel to Sprint this week because they shut off the tower that serves the area that my office is in. No indoor coverage there anymore. But Sprint is on our company tower.
