NW Washington | I think it may depend on what kind of tree was there first. Some trees are good at suppressing growth around in their root zone. A black walnut is a good example.
I would remove most or all of the wood chips and fill the hole with soil from somewhere else. I have a rose that is struggling that was planted near an arborvitae stump and I think the old tree roots may be the problem.
I second the recommendation on not getting an apple tree. Apples need a lot of care and spraying to get a decent crop. Too many apple trees in yards just become hosts for various apple pests. | |
