, I believe this all started a few years back. The town of Rochelle has it's own city internet, and the mayor has a history in the communication industry. anyway Rochelle wanted to acces the fiber along I88 for internet from the tolway (they use it for Ipass) and then they got an agreement with the tollway for I90 to Roc kford as well and this is when they got in touch with the dot about running a leg up I39 to tie the 2 together. they call it the northern illinois tech. triangle.(nitt?) it gives Rochelle redundancy to the fastest internet access point somewhere in
Chicago area. I dot agreed to it , then others wanted to do the same so from moline to Rochelle, Madison to Rockford, then Champaign wanted in, etc. all the cities wanted in and it has grown by leaps and bounds. this is the main reason for it all. | |
