You are correct, Cousinit, corn farmers have, in the past, received subsidy payments. However, when you look at where the government is with their finances, we need to get Ag off the gravy train. The sooner you can learn to live without them, the better off you are. 'Cause it's gonna come. Grain farmers have had to learn how to price their product, and have had to start buying crop insurance. Granted, it is partiially subsidized. But the fact is that farmers are contributing. That is a good thing. Dairy farmers are going to have to take notes, learn how to forward price their product, and learn to use insurance products. Yeah, I know you are self-employed. But I also say..... if you can't make it, then maybe it's time to get out and do something else. When prices drop, it's a sign that there is too much supply chasing too little demand. That's generally a sign that someone needs to do something different. Question becomes: who will it be? you? or your neighbor? The dairy farmer who will produce the least cost milk is the guy who will survive. Will that be you? or are you going to be the one that gripes about the price being too low? |
