At least 4 inches. A good firm, dry compacted base under the slab is key to a good crack free slab.


It helps, but concrete can crack when the base don't move at all.....as it cures, it will almost always crack. Soffcut it no more than bout 250 sqft per square as soon as you finish troweling and it'll look great.
