NE Iowa | I still think it's the N. With the manure that a pasture gets it should have enough S. I know this was just an experiment but I think fertilizing pastures in the fall would not be very efficient. N and S are both very mobile and therefore leachable. AMS is great but expensive per pound of N for a pasture. Part of a N program for corn is one thing but on pasture it's hard to beat urea treated with Agrotain. I like to spread 100# of urea (46# of N) treated with Agrotain in early April to get pastures started. I know they say it only adds to the surplus of grass in the spring but I like to call it spring stockpiling. I like to get as much growth as I can when the weather is cool and rains are almost guaranteed (May and early June). Then if it gets hot and dry in July or August this knee high over mature grass gets me through the summer. Over mature grass is better than no grass. Part of the reason I never mow pastures. | |
