Subject: Re: Mega Dairy Economics??

frederick, MD
I milk 225 cows. I grazed, and fed a tmr for years. My barns where old and we can only really graze april, may and into june a little, and sept and oct. In the heat the cows would burn up. production would drop from 70 lbs to 50. In the winter it was a pain dealing with the slop and over crowding. I built a barn and went total confinment. If i was to graze i essentially would be invested in 2 different production systems. It is hard to make it work. This is not new zeland where we can graze 10 mo out of the year.

And yes, dairy does suck. It has sucked for 10 years. I hope it comes back, I guess I will hang on until then

My grandparents where throwing away some papers from when they dairy farmed in the 1970s. They showed me there tax papers. I had no idea they made so much money back then. They made more money then, then I do now and they were shipping about 1/4 of the milk I am shipping now.
