Faunsdale, AL
glucocorticoids in general are immunosuppressive and that's part of what we use them for. So giving more than needed or giving it for the wrong thing (swollen knee is infection instead of a sprain for example) can blow up in your face.

The thing that we work around when we want to use them long term is when you are giving them, the body quits producing it's own normal amounts of cortisol which is necessary for life! If you give them long enough, then miss a few days or quit giving them, the animal can crash. Their adranal gland cannot start up production suddenly after being suppressed for a long time. This is called Addison's disease. John Kennedy (president) suffered from naturally occurring Addison's and was on cortisone treatments to manage it. It gave him a jowly, puffy face. Now drugs are available that replace the cortisol without causing that.

Whoever is selling you the Dexamathasone (prescription only) should be labeling it for you to use it. That's the way it works. The rest of us don't see your animals and can't accurately recommend treatments.
