Have had a little bit of experience with JD hydrostatics (but not much). I sounds to me like you may have an internal valve or bypass line that is plugged or restricted which is creating some internal pressure. Also, on my mower I have discovered that it is better for the transmission oil to be just a bit low. This keeps it from coming out the vent since the oil "grows" when it gets hot.
