Take two small straight blade screwdrivers. Put one in between the barrel sleeve and the snap ring and pry to lock the snap ring in place so it won't spin in the housing while you put the other screwdriver under the free end of the ring and pry it out of it's groove. It'll take a bit of experimenting to find the best places to put the "holder" and the angle to pry on the one that is going to lift the end of the snapring out, but that's the best way I've found to do it. Without the holder, unless the snapring is rusted into the groove, it will spin as soon as you start to get it lifted out and your screwdriver will slip off every time.
Before you put them back in, grind the ends so the bevel is more pointed or has a lip on it so you can get a better purchase on it next time. | |
