I would also check the waterpump belt and all of the pulleys that it contacts. On our 1996 9682 the pulleys got a rust and burnt belt buildup in the grooves. I sandblasted the pulleys and that helped some but they are all rust pitted. They should be replaced because they will eat up a belt in about 400 hours.
