Subject: Pasture farrowing story in New Holland magazine

South Dakota
There was an interesting story about a guy who pasture farrowed year round in insulated huts. He sells organic hogs to restaurants and grocery stores. He sells 5000 hogs a year. I tried this 10 years ago with 10 purebred Berkshires when there was a market for Berkshires in japan. I sold all of the babies local to people who loved the old fashion hog. It was fatty. I personally like lean pork but the berkshire bacon was out of this world. I had small litters and the sows where hard to work with. Castration and clipping eye teeth. was like hunting wild animals with a tigress protecting them. I could not keep them in the electric fence and they destroyed my yard a few times before my wife was fed up with them. I like the idea of pasture huts the way described and how he picked sows for maternal traits. I wish he would pick my cows.
