Faunsdale, AL | Auger mixer and hay..................Make darned sure the hay is processed fine enough for your mixer. Had an old Harsh here that would bend an auger if you let any long hay get in it. We were grinding hay with silage chopper at the time and there was always a pile of loose hay left next to the hopper where we threw the bales in. That got shoved into the bay with the chopped stuff and frequently the mixer would grab a wad of that and pull it down under one of the lower augers and bend it.
Now we have the mixers with knives on the augers and shear bars designed for hay, but tough hay is still a problem. Have had it wrapped up so tight with some spring ryegrass hay that it took a day with bush ax, saws alls, machete etc to get it loose!
A 3 auger BJM was the first one we ever had. Sold it to our neighbor when we got the first Harsh and he used if for years afterwards
For feeding byproducts and chopped stalks or hay, the auger mixers will do a great job. | |
