Totally agree with Ed, you have a wonderfull opportunity and it speaks volumes about who you are and the trust the farmer has in you. I started by crop scouting for a local retail, and then spraying. You will not take long getting onto a spayer. It is very handy having a practical spray background, because many of the in field diagnostics are a result of the sprayer and the conditions it is opperating under. As a crop scout, you will recognize drift, spray pattern problems, low water volume issues, spray misses and boom purge problems because you will have made that mistake once in a while yourself.
We have Agri-Coaches into the U.S. and all over Canada, you can check the network out at www.agritrend.com, we likely have a couple dozen coaches that started out the way you are describing.
I think you should plan on going to the No-Till Conference and some meetings like that. It will be like drinking from a fire hydrant at first, information overload. Before you know it, you'll be teaching us what you have learned. Surround yourself with good people and have fun, it is a wonderful time to be involved in agriculture!!
