Bookwork is a PIA for most people. I'm an accountant and most people's books aren't in very good order if it's their first year I'm doing their taxes. It all depends on what you want your "accountant" to do for you. They are many times a person's only financial contact with their business.

If you get a good one, they can save you thousands of dollars in maybe not-so-free advice, but you have to consider that regs change every year and accountants have to keep up with all this. Also, there are more than one way to do your taxes so we have to do them several ways (Sec 179 is a big one) to get the best result.
