Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa | Very good reminder, Mike. I'd also like to add to that a suggestion that everyone have at least one (preferably more) working fire extinguisher in their home. (Check the gauge while you're swapping out batteries) A young neighbor family recently had a home fire, in which a TV apparently shorted out in the dead of night and started a fire in the basement family room of the home. Smoke alarm, alarm clock and furnace fan all kicked in at about the same moment, and the family escaped without injury. The dad did the 100yd dash out to their hog facility for a fire extinguisher and had the fire knocked down by the time the fire dept arrived. Insurance totalled the home and the family will be building a new one this spring. There are sooooo many ways that this incident could have had a different outcome. The "Ifs" are almost unending. The important thing is that this young couple and their three kids are alive and healthy. Smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are vital in my opinion. |
