Michigan.
Unless you buck that stem up and let it dry for 3-4 months, it will be slow burning and hard to keep going without lots of brush to keep things hot.
Cottonwoods are sponges with roots, but they dry out quick enough once cut into rounds.
Stumps? Best time is at night, with every old innertube you can find stuffed under it, and lots of brush to keep the thing hot and smouldering for days.
I hate burning stumps.
