Thanks for shareing . . . land use is always controversial. Dictating to owners what they can and cant't do with their ownership with propertys.
Keep hammering home, the point of once it's gone, it's gone forever.
There are many other places, develoment can happen - just because some developer happen to buy /own the best peice of ag land, doesn't mean the owner can do what they want with it - for short term profits. Have them trade out of it for the other unproductive lands for their developements. Going up is better/less costly then single family units that are almost touching anyway.  
At somepoint, it could be neccessary to have self sufficiency on the island and now is the time to determan that, before all the best productive land becomes unproductive.
