New Mexico
In general just find a reasonable "fit, trim, decent range condition," middle.
Put em in a decent pasture 2 to 3 weeks prior to turning the bull in to flush em naturally.

The earlier they wash out for ANY reason the better.
What they tend to do w 2 much extra feed is just like Gary says, they all breed up.
However, the ones that were not fertile enough to it without alot of help that first year, then tend to FAIL breed up the next year.
( then your stuck w an open 2 1/2 yr old come that fall which is a low value fed vs the open long yearling she would have been the previous year )
( also ANY holes in em at calfing..just sell a graft calf, and throw her on feed )

Been some REAL decent money made feeding 1st calfers that washed out early rather than keeping em around the past few years.
