still money to be made feeding, byproducts have dropped pretty good, can put gain on light calves for less than $.75 and you can sell that gain later as a $1.50 heavy feeder, like the grain farmers and cash rent, feeders seem to want to cut each other's throats for the opportunity to work for nothing and in the end they all lose, that is why an old guy I know always tells me the cow-calf guy makes money 8 out of 10 years and the feeder makes money 2 out of 8 years.  You would have made a lot more money in those new buildings buying bred cows in dec and jan, feeding a cheap ration and calving them out and selling as pairs or short weaning the calves at 60-90 days and growing them. then pour the silage to those cows and can them later this summer for $90-100/cwt.  But I'm being an armchair quarterback and not helping any.  I'm just really glad I got my cowherd now, been years I've wondered why but it is finally paying off.
