One of the problems is the legislation that puts more liability on the gas providers, for example requires them to inspect lines on private service lines about every 5 years. Every time there is a gas line explosion the outcry for more regulations gets louder. If the NG is being supplied to a city then people understand the need to have the pipeline. If the line just supplies Joe Schmow's dryer, then its a danger to society, it doesn't help when lines get hit because Joe Schmow didn't make the locate call before running his tiling machine across the NG line.
I agree that pipelines make more sense than high pressure NG tanks in vehicles that are driving thru a downtown tunnel at rush hour and last maybe 5 - 7 years.
