Faunsdale, AL | Could be most anything wrong in a baby calf like that. Most all of them aren't going to be possible/economically possible to fix.
How soon after eating does it come back up? Does it look digested at all, or just like she swallowed it? Does she have plenty of saliva?
I suspect an esophageal problem as well. It wouldn't hurt to put a stomach tube down just to see, but that fixing anything would be a long shot! I would take out the long hay and see if she gets along better on just grain. If there's a problem with the esophagus or the "valve" into the stomach, just grain should be easier and you might get some weight on her and grow her out of it for a month or two. If it's really something structurally wrong with the esophagus, it usually gets worse as they get bigger, not better.
If nothing else, you could raise her on milk to get large enough for veal.
I have had older heifers, usually first calf dairy cows that spit out cuds or hold them in their cheeks probably because their stomach hurts. | |
