Wi

Istumped - 2/21/2012 17:42 Well if you get def and diesel tank confused you should not own a diesel period. And if you can afford the diesel option and it makes sense for you too have. You can afford too replace the motor. Just my opinion

the problem is that there is no support network. Nobody is educated or knows the stuff and the system. Some try to explain it or think they know it and are often wrong leaving the customer not knowing anything. There are plenty of people who never knew their truck needed DEF until it went into limp mode. The dealers aren't doing a good job of explaining it.

The DEF tank requires a 19mm nozzle. You cant put diesel in it at the pump, but you can put DEF in the diesel tank. The world is full of stupid people and I agree with you. people dumb enough to put it in the wrong hole should be buying the engine. They color coded it for you even. Green is fuel, Blue is DEF. Its universal with no language barrier. Just back to basics.

The diesels have gotten to the point where it doesn't make sense for many to have them. Unless you really got some stuff to haul and need the power, or you plan on driving a lot of miles while loaded, it will not pay for itself running legal on-road fuel.  Diesel is $0.40 per gallon more. The Duramax option is $8,200, i believe the Ford is similar if not more.  The gas engines are getting similar MPGs for driving around town looking cool in your big HD truck. Towing the numbers do drop. You would need about 8% better fuel economy to justify to added cost of the fuel. Basically going from 12mpg on the gasser to 13mpg on the diesel. However lets say you want to pay off the $8,200 difference in 100,000 miles. Simple math says you need to save $0.082 per mile to justify that. You would need to get around 17.5-18mpg assuming 12mpg with the gas engine and gas @3.69 and diesel @3.98 just to pay for the difference. Dont forget more expensive oil changes, the cost of DEF which is minute but still there, to be safe and error on the high side figure on spending $20-30 maybe every 5,000 miles.

The numbers just dont add up anymore unless you truely are using the truck. And even then, fuel alone wont make it look jusitfyable.
