If you decide it is easier to change axles. Torch the U bolts and buy new. They aren't to be used again and a ton of work to get them off in one piece.
The newer axles where you can put brake shoes and drums on without touching the bearings are a good improvement. As good as bearings and seals are anymore, a person can go the life of a trailer without looking at them.
