First off, is it a single stage or 2 stage? Does it use an unloader? If the answer to both of these questions is yes then I would increase the pressure. If it is a single stage, then I probably wouldn't. If it is a 2 stage but doesn't have an unloader, I would plumb one in with a new pressure switch and replace the starter. As far as overloading the motor, check with an amp gauge, against the faceplate amperage. Might go to a smaller pulley on the motor. (slow down the pump) or put on a larger motor. I would try to use the old compressor if it is 2 stage, they don't make them like they use to.
