Have you checked the fuel lines coming right off of the tank? My dad's 6.5 did that, would sputter, die, and then run a bit - he had pin holes from rust on the elbows coming out of the fuel tank sending unit assembly, so it would start sucking air under "heavy" fuel consumption. Dropped it off at the shop around the corner from his work, they had it fixed by lunchtime - about $350 after $200-some-odd assemble and then a guy to drop the tank and replace. He was lucky tank straps are in good shape, otherwise pulling/cutting box is the next easiest solution.
