West Chazy, New York | The railroads here started in the heydays of sugar and ran pretty much all the way around the island. Some of the old grades and right of ways are still visible. They reached their peak during WWII, when they moved troops and supplies between the bases, the harbors, and the airstrips, but that was also when trucks began to make inroads into their business. When the war ended, they had lots of cash but their rolling stock was about worn out, so they went out of business. There is a small railroad historical society that has preserved some engines and cars and works on restoring more, and they run an excursion train from Ewa to Waianae on weekends. Other than that, it's all gone. | |
