Maybe he is feeding free choice. If the feeder will eat less then he has to buy more minerals. When we had cattle we feed free choice minerals and could tell the difference in the quaility of the forage by how much we had to add to the feeder.

Last fat steers on this place was 1980. I do miss the cattle but I like to sleep in on Sundays better....
