Penny stocks have little proven value and trade mostly on public perception. The value can sit in the doldrums for years until theres some kind of a trigger to spark a buying spree. If the electronic traders pick up on it you can be in for a good ride. But mostly its a short bounce and you want to take your penny or two of profit. And more often than not you will take a hit and sell for less than your investment just to get into something else. These are not buy and hold stocks. But investing in penny stocks is both fun and educational. Tracking your thousands of shares on your iphone is a great pastime. You will use this knowledge later in life to make solid decisions regarding your retirement fund.
If you want to gain wealth over time invest in good stocks paying a dividend. You can use them as collateral at the bank or leverage to buy more stocks. They can be converted to cash within a day.
