Central Arkansas | Traveled to Sindh Province in SW Pakistan three years ago for the purpose of training farmers. Traveling N from Karachi, I saw what looked like a rice farmer's dream--vast tracts of flat, level, ground with lots of irrigation/drainage canals. But why was there no vegetation growing there? The land was full of salt. Mechanization was very limited. Rice and cotton harvests all done by hand. Stalks were harvested as well for fuel and feed. Fertilizer came in sacks and manure "buffalo dust" was used a lot. Wheat was flood irrigated like we do rice--I presume to help flush out the salt. The latitude was the same as San Antonio, TX, but rice wasn't planted until June because that's when Indus River water became available. There was no Roundup ready cotton, but many of the chemicals we use were available and sprayed through a back pack sprayer. I did the best I could with a "sprayer calibration" lecture.
