NEND
We use a variable yield goal to do exactly what agspurt does. We are in a highly variable environment with sand/gravel hilltops and cattail sloughs/drown out/alkali in the same field. Getting to an even fertility level is not an option for us. We are pushing our more productive zones and cutting back on the less productive dirt. Typical yield goal for wheat in this area is 60 bu/ac. For wheat we are now using a 45-75 bushel yield goal and fertilizing accordingly. Then we use the yield data to help us figure our removal and choose our minimum and maximum yield goals. We usually zone sample these fields every year or every other year with an average productivity map based on multiple years of satellite imagery and/or yield data or both.
