Subject: Re: On Farm Trials

Franklinton, LA
I am a retired extension agricultural engineer. I have really enjoyed working with cotton, rice, sugarcane and soybean farmers on a few hundred farm demonstration plots. In addition to meeting and working with several very nice farmers, I probably learned a lot more than the farmers. I think demonstration plots of this type are great for training extension specialists and county agents!

On a more serious note, trials of this type really helped us find areas that needed more research.

I hope you enjoy working with your extension agent. Please let him know what you expect and do what you promise in a timely manner. It hurts the old ego when you work with someone for a few months and he messes things up by being late with a few critical imputs! I remember one farmer who harvested a soybean plot one night before a hurricane came through the next day. An 18 hour delay in harvesting this plot would have screwed up several months of work. Farmers like this are very enjoyable to work with.
