D6Joe - This was from way back when wheat and barley were the normal crops. Combining was normally done by the end of august. If the renter did nothing the weeds would take over before the contract was fully expired...
This is the first explanation that has made sense to me. I was in the group saying "You've GOT to be kidding" because it isn't going to happen here.  We lost 80 acres this fall due to a landowner passing and the new owner wanting his current tenant to farm all his ground. Once we were done with harvest he started fall tillage. 



It makes sense, but more likely, the land owner (older farmer ) would take his crop off, do his fall tillage - then decide during the late fall / winter to rent his land out (retire?) . . .  he'd want the land tilled back, as he left it. Anyway, that's more the thoughts / actions in my area (corn, beans small grains - generation).
