Running a CIH 1200 planter now, with no mods.  In the past I ran deere planters with spiked closing wheels, row cleaners and souped up down pressure systems.

If you want to plant is some hard ground, try chopping off a small grain in may.  Ground can turn to concrete when the sun hits it. And its not much better planting double crop soybeans after wheat in july.  Had troube getting my 1200 in the ground this year.
