I recommend a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, minimum. That's about right for a 17" monitor. At one time I shot for a forum that would look good at 800 x 600 on a 15" monitor. Time marches on!

There isn't much we can do about the way large photos display. Most uploaded images (<100 KB) will fit on the screen (@ 1024 x 768) unless they are very low-quality JPGs.
