Subject: RE: seed companies

Monsanto by far has the largest breeding and genetics program. They spend more money by far on their breeding program, and provide many smaller companies with genetics.

Syngenta does have some good traits coming down the pipe, but the Callisto beans release date has been pushed back to 2016. Dow's 2, 4-D beans are projected to release a year or so behind Monsanto's dicamba beans in 2012.

Dow sure looks like they are trying to seriously expand their seed business, but are probably still lacking in the germplasm department. However there is plenty of money behind their products.

Agreliant gets all of their traits from Monsanto, plus the majority of their genetics. Its one of the few smaller companies that can hang with the big four.

Pioneer, I'm not sure what they are shooting for exactly. Maybe the best traditional breeding program, but continuing to purchase all their traits is not a sustainable business model years down the road.

US market share for corn: Pioneer 28%, Dekalb 25%, Channel 8%, Syngenta 7%, Agreliant 6%, Dow 6%

Beans : Pioneer 30%, Asgrow 28%, Syngenta 8%, Channel 7%, Dow 5%

Not exact figures, but this is how they ranked a couple years ago. Hope this helps
