That is an old guideline that works fairly well in some cases. The "Problem" with using that as a guideline in Muck soils is that they usually hold water till later in the spring, therefore staying cooler into the season. That coolness keeps the OM from converting into usable nitrogen. From an N release standpoint Mucks seldom live up to what should be their reputation.
