For internet, you will be more than fine. 100Mbps is the wired connection speed at which the computer can talk to the modem. Your internet speed at the computer is only as fast as your slowest link, usually the one coming into your house. To put it in relative terms, my internet is 6 Mbps download speed. This is considered very fast (I know some on here would kill for speed like that in their area), but still well less than your 54Mbps link between your router and laptop. Many broadband internet connections are less than 1Mbps, and dial-up maximum is .053Mbps.

So...the only time this speed is likely to matter to you is if you transfer large files between the laptop and desktop. This is where from HDD to HDD you can take advantage of the faster speeds. You will not get 54Mbps throughput on your wireless link either, especially if you have secuity turned on. But you have to ask yourself how often you will be transferring large files between to figure out how much you are willing to spend.
