Multi Peril Crop Insurance (sometimes called Federal Crop) is available for most commonly grown crops in the area. It is sold by private insurance companies and subsidized by the Feds. The local USDA can't help you except to point you towards a list of agents (maybe). Check with your agent that carries your other insurance, or get on an internet site for Rain and Hail, NAU, or any of the other companies that offer it. Biggest problem is that MPCI must be committed to by March 15 before the growing season so you're out of luck for 2006. Lots of different plans and rates, too many to go into here, but you can spend from $3 to $30 per acre and more. All plans are the same and the cost is the same regardless of the company or agent you buy from. You need to start about next January for the 2007 growing season. Couple of sites to get you started.

Crop Hail insurance is available in most areas. You do not have to have a MPCI policy to buy it although it can be attached to a MPCI policy. A completely private offering, no government subsidy, coverage and rates do vary. According to the NAU agent website, Michigan has statewide hail rates. Some states vary by county. The rates for MI are $.60 per $100 coverage for corn and $1.10 per $100 coverage on soybeans. Hail insurance covers, of course, hail damage, fire by any cause (MPCI only covers lightning), vandalism, transport of grain to the bin and then to the elevator plus other perils and pays on an acre by acre basis.

You need to find a good agent close by that really understands all forms of crop insurance and agriculture too and then spend some time working with him. Wish I was licensed in MI!!
