Subject: RE: humic acid products CoC

NW Iowa
Humic acid is one of a few different ways to break down residue. But its important to understand what is actually breaking it down faster than normal and that is an increase in microbial activity.

My opinion: shred the stalks, spray humic, apply any fall fertilizer if thats your plan, disc ripper, field cultivator/mulchfinisher twice in spring, plant with row cleaners and with in-furrow starter fertilizer and/or humic acid-type product. Apply half of your nitrogen fall or spring and half in June with sidedresser, consider foliar feeding and fungicide.

Residue breakdown is one of many things a CoC producer has to deal with. It is a factor in both creating a good seedbed and getting good seed placement as well as allowing nutrient availability. Humic acid will help with residue breakdown and nutrient availability but it is not an overnight answer--it takes a multiple-year committment and its results will build over time.
