Thumb of Michigan | We no tilled dry beans (Black Turtles) into rye different times. Usually in 15" rows, not stripped. To benefits we saw besides better weed control was that the beans would climb the rye, and we also felt we had less incidence of white mold. Generally, the rye had been burned off before planting as we don't usually plant dry beans until late May- early June. Rye would have been pretty rank had we let it grow. We did vary from that a little one time. Had some rye I was growing for seed, had the local duster fly some dry beans on in late May into the rye. Spotty stand, never got much rain after we flew them on. Turned into a cover crop test is all, never harvested the beans. In that case, we feel we would have had a much better shot at making a stand had we flown them on earlier in may when we have a higher chance of catching a couple of rains.
Not sure how strips would work, have no experience with them. I'd not worry at all about alleopathy regardless of whether you plant pre or post rye termination. | |
