Macon, IL | My guess is the poorer spots are those without or farther from the tiles-"wet spots" that usually stunt the corn. With 8 weeks of no rain and this heat I think the wet areas allowed the corn to hang on longer-while the well drained areas got off to a better start they didn't so much as mature they just died in the last 3 weeks. The typically poor areas still have some green in the stalk.
When done it will be real interesting to overlay 2009 and 2011 maps.
