North Central Illinois | There should be no shortage of seed corn for next year. Companies ramped up production this year. They will compensate for lost US production by growing more in South America. That is another reason the seed companies are pushing sales earlier and earlier every year. They need to make planting decisions for down there about the time we are harvesting up here. If production comes up short here or a certain number has explosive sales they can grow more of it in South America. That is a big reason and of course the rest of it is plain old salesmanship. If they can get you to sign an order early that means they beat the competition to it. The only way to get guys interested in ordering early and not canceling the order is to offer big price incentives. You just have to do the math on fall pay versus in season pay. If the savings between the two is more than the cost of money it is a business decision no matter how distasteful you might find it. | |
